The book that I did for my non-fiction novel is The Story of the Human Body by Daniel E. Lieberman, and my book club included Evelyn. This book is very good, but it is extremely condensed and takes a lengthy time to read. If a high school student were to read this book, they should make sure that they read a little every night, and not to try to read most of it in one or two nights. Also, I think that they should only read this if they are serious about knowing a lot about evolution, and really enjoy reading non-fiction.
This book is mainly about different ways the human body has evolved in health and disease, from chewing different types of food (diet) to walking upright. If you are interested in evolution this is definitely a good book for you. It tells how we adapted to our environments over time, how we were supposed to evolve, and the problems in our body against the path of evolution. This novel includes some mind blowing facts about how environment now has changed from the past, during our ancestors. Many times, it mentions similar things repeatedly so you remember things better.
One of the things that Lieberman states is that we evolved to produce as many offspring as we can, not to have maximum health. We are designed to gain weight to produce healthier babies. Also, he said that humans running barefoot was better for our bodies than using running shoes that we use now, because it made them run and land lighter, and not hurt joints as much. This is interesting because we should have better technology than our ancestors. Nowadays, we should design our shoes to assist our running more than running barefoot.
I recommend this book to the enthusiastic high school reader who is interested about how the human body has evolved. This book is very condensed. Give yourself time to read all about the details and facts packed into it. It takes a longer time to read and process for some people, but once you finish you will know a lot about evolution. This book was mostly a positive experience for me. Most of it was interesting. A couple times throughout the book, it got repetitive and exhausted me to read, but it is worth it.
